HMS Hermes (R12) — Teak Pen
A Piece of Royal Navy History, Preserved in Your Hand
This handcrafted pen is made from authentic teak recovered from HMS Hermes (R12), the Royal Navy’s last conventional aircraft carrier and flagship during the Falklands conflict. The timber carries the character and history of a ship that served across multiple decades, adapting to new roles and new eras. Holding it is like carrying a preserved fragment of naval heritage into everyday life.
The Story of HMS Hermes (R12)
Launched in 1953 and commissioned in 1959, HMS Hermes served the Royal Navy for over 25 years. Originally designed as a conventional aircraft carrier, she later became a commando carrier, an ASW carrier, and ultimately the flagship of the British Task Force during the Falklands War in 1982.
As the command centre for the entire operation, Hermes played a pivotal role in the conflict, coordinating air operations, logistics, and fleet movements. After her Royal Navy service, she continued her career with the Indian Navy as INS Viraat, serving until 2017 — one of the longest‑serving aircraft carriers in history.
During refits and decommissioning work, sections of her original teak were removed. This historic timber has now been transformed into a limited number of handcrafted pens, each one a tribute to the ship, her crews, and her remarkable service life.
